The “No Empty Chair” campaign is a teen driving safety education and enforcement campaign, funded by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, to raise awareness of highway dangers during prom and graduation season. Oswego City Police will be joining law enforcement across the state in the week-long, multi-agency campaign which will run from Monday, April 24 through Friday, April 28, 2017. Oswego City Police are encouraging teens to make smart decisions about speeding, drinking, texting and other unsafe behaviors when behind the wheel. Special enforcement days will target some of the unsafe driving behaviors as follows: April 24-28, 2017 Monday April 24 – Speeding in School Zones Tuesday April 25 – Seatbelt/Child Restraints Wednesday April 26 – Cell Phone and Texting Thursday April 27 – Operation Safe Stop Friday April 28 – Underage Drinking/Impaired Driving Oswego City Mayor William J. Barlow, Jr. states “Each year, across our nation, teenage drivers are killed, injured or left with lifetime disabilities from motor vehicle crashes that are preventable. These incidents have a long lasting impact on our school’s population and on our community. Please do your part to ensure that you are in your chair on graduation day and are able safely enjoy this time with family and friends.” Oswego Police Chief Tory L. DeCaire states “The end of the school year is about celebrations and making memories that will last a lifetime. Oswego Police, along with other law enforcement agencies, will be out during the enforcement period to specifically target some of the unsafe behaviors that lead to car crashes. Please, be responsible and make good choices; try to make this a time to remember and not a time that you, or your family, will regret.”
